Held at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati at Triveni Sangam, the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings on Earth. The previous Maha Kumbh (2025) drew over 660 million visitors over 45 days.
Plan your travel
Book trains 4 months in advance via IRCTC: popular dates sell out instantly. Indian Railways runs special Kumbh trains. If flying into Prayagraj airport, expect heavy traffic into the mela area; allow 3-4 hours from airport to camp.
Stay options
Tent cities run by UP government and akhadas: book through up.gov.in/kumbh portal. Hotels in Prayagraj proper book out 6+ months in advance. Avoid unregistered tent operators near the ghats.
Crowd safety: what families must know
Stampedes are the single biggest risk at Kumbh. Avoid the main bathing dates (Shahi Snan) if possible. If you must go, arrive 4+ hours early, identify multiple exits, never carry small children on shoulders during peak crowds, and keep elderly family members in the centre of your group, not the edges.
Lost-and-found is the biggest practical problem
Every Kumbh sees thousands of separated families. Police announcement camps are overwhelmed. A GPS-enabled wearable on every family member, especially children and elderly, is the single most effective prevention. Set a rendezvous point and time before you split up.

Health precautions
Heat stroke and dehydration peak in summer Kumbhs. Carry ORS, sunscreen, hats, and at least 2L water per person per day. Visit one of the 100+ medical tents at the first sign of fatigue. Norovirus outbreaks are common: eat only at registered langars or vendors.
